And when that service stops, will your application fail?<\/p>\n<p>If that describes your situation, you should deploy the new &#8220;supporting service&#8221; sanity check. Instead of relying on the HTTP code alone, AlwaysUp can now scan for a specific error message returned on the page. Many times there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parent_process\" target=\"_blank\">parent process<\/a> (the one that was started) and one or more <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Child_process\" target=\"_blank\">child processes<\/a> launched to perform specific tasks.<\/p>\n<p>That arrangement posed a problem for some of AlwaysUp&#8217;s most popular sanity checks. They would only check the parent process and not the child processes, and sometimes that led to false positives.<\/p>\n<p>Our solution is to extend those health checks to interrogate the entire process tree &mdash; the top-level process and all its sub-processes. That&#8217;s a new option is available to you when configuring some sanity checks.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, let&#8217;s look at the network connections sanity check. A new setting is available on the main configuration window. Once you activate it, AlwaysUp will search the entire process tree for connections:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/network-connections-sanity-check-scans-process-tree.png\" class=\"zoomPopup\" title=\"AlwaysUp scans the entire process tree for network connections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-padding\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/network-connections-sanity-check-scans-process-tree.png\" title=\"AlwaysUp scans the entire process tree for network connections (click to enlarge)\" alt=\"AlwaysUp scans the entire process tree for network connections\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>A similar option is available in the sanity check that restarts your application whenever it uses too many operating system handles. It&#8217;s new as well.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"command-prompt\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"blog-section\">\n<div style=\"width:100%;margin-bottom:30px;\">\n<div style=\"margin:0px;float:right;\"><a href=\"#top\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.coretechnologies.com\/images\/top.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"50\" height=\"18\" title=\"Go to the top\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"blog-caption\">Control AlwaysUp from a command prompt<\/h2>\n<p>With Version 17.5, you can do much more with &#8220;AlwaysUp.exe&#8221; from an <a href=\"\/WindowsServices\/FAQ.html#ElevatedPrompt\">elevated command prompt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Previous releases supported basic operations (start, stop, etc.) but XML import, XML export, detach, and help are new. Let&#8217;s explore those additions.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/check-mark-14x14.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" alt=\"\"> XML import &amp; export<\/h3>\n<p>To create a new AlwaysUp application, run:<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-box\">AlwaysUp.exe -import &lt;xml-file-name&gt;<\/div>\n<p>To save an application to an XML file, run:<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-box\">AlwaysUp.exe -export &lt;xml-file-name&gt; &lt;application-name&gt;<\/div>\n<p>For example, let&#8217;s say you have an AlwaysUp called MyServer. This command will export it to &#8220;C:\\AlwaysUp Apps\\myserver.xml&#8221;:<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-box\">AlwaysUp.exe -export MyServer &quot;C:\\AlwaysUp Apps\\myserver.xml&quot;<\/div>\n<p>As always, be sure to enclose the XML file name in quotes if it contains a space.<\/p>\n<p>The XML must conform to the <a href=\"\/products\/AlwaysUpCLT\/alwaysup_installservice.xsd\" target=\"_blank\">AlwaysUp CLT XSD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/check-mark-14x14.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" alt=\"\"> Detach<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible to stop AlwaysUp but leave your application running. That <b>detach<\/b> feature &mdash; which is available from the &#8220;Application&#8221; menu &mdash; can be useful when you need to perform application maintenance and don&#8217;t want AlwaysUp to get in the way.<\/p>\n<p>To detach an application, run:<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-box\">AlwaysUp.exe -detach &lt;application-name&gt;<\/div>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/check-mark-14x14.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" alt=\"\"> Help\/usage<\/h3>\n<p>To see the full command line capabilities, run:<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-box\">AlwaysUp.exe -help<\/div>\n<p>A window with the details will pop up:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/alwaysup-command-line-help.png\" class=\"zoomPopup\" title=\"AlwaysUp command line help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-padding\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/alwaysup-command-line-help.png\" title=\"AlwaysUp command line help (click to enlarge)\" alt=\"AlwaysUp command line help\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Even though these enhancements don&#8217;t rival the power and flexibility of <a href=\"\/products\/AlwaysUpCLT\/\">AlwaysUp Command Line Tools (CLT)<\/a>, we expect customers will put them to good use!<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"logging\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"blog-section\">\n<div style=\"width:100%;margin-bottom:30px;\">\n<div style=\"margin:0px;float:right;\"><a href=\"#top\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.coretechnologies.com\/images\/top.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"50\" height=\"18\" title=\"Go to the top\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"blog-caption\">Heightened logging &amp; accountability<\/h2>\n<p>Building on the <a href=\"\/blog\/alwaysup\/version-17-enterprise-security\/\">advanced logging capabilities introduced in 17.0<\/a>, AlwaysUp reports additional details to the Windows Event Logs.<\/p>\n<p>Most notably, instead of writing general &#8220;updated&#8221; records whenever someone edits an application, AlwaysUp mentions what was changed.
