This new operating system extends Microsoft&#8217;s reach into modern cloud technologies (with <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server-docs\/get-started\/getting-started-with-nano-server\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nano Server<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.docker.com\/2016\/09\/dockerforws2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Docker<\/a>) and introduces a host of under-the-hood improvements in security, networking and automation. This <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server-docs\/get-started\/what-s-new-in-windows-server-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Technet article<\/a> digs into the details.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Anything New for Window Services?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>No &#8212; at least nothing that we could find.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2016 was not accompanied by an update to the underlying <a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/windows\/desktop\/ms685974(v=vs.85).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Services API<\/a>. There are no new capabilities available to applications built on top of those mission-critical functions supporting 24&#215;7 operation.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the reliable <a href=\"\/blog\/windows-services\/essential-tools-windows-services-msc\/\">Services Control Panel application<\/a> remains the same as we saw in the previous generation, Server 2012 R2:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/win-server-2016-services-application.png\" class=\"zoomPopup\" rel=\"zoomgroup noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Services.msc on Windows Server 2016\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/win-server-2016-services-application.png\" border=\"0\" title=\"Services.msc on Windows Server 2016 (click to enlarge)\" alt=\"Services.msc on Windows Server 2016\" width=\"560\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, we were still very curious to see if any of our applications would run into trouble on Microsoft&#8217;s latest and greatest!<\/p>\n<h2><b>AlwaysUp Windows Services Work Well on Server 2016<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>We easily installed <a href=\"\/products\/AlwaysUp\/\">AlwaysUp 9.7<\/a> on our Server 2016 test machine. And with no major changes for Windows Services, it was no surprise to see AlwaysUp running applications like <a href=\"\/products\/AlwaysUp\/Apps\/RunDropboxAsAService.html\">Dropbox<\/a>, <a href=\"\/products\/AlwaysUp\/Apps\/RunBoxSyncAsAService.html\">Box Sync<\/a> and <a href=\"\/products\/AlwaysUp\/Apps\/SetupSkypeAsAWindowsService.html\">Skype<\/a> reliably in the background:<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/images\/alwaysup-running-skype-win-server-2016.png\" class=\"zoomPopup\" rel=\"zoomgroup noopener noreferrer\" title=\"AlwaysUp running Skype on Windows Server 2016\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/alwaysup-running-skype-win-server-2016.png\" border=\"0\" title=\"AlwaysUp running Skype on Windows Server 2016 (click to enlarge)\" alt=\"AlwaysUp running Skype on Windows Server 2016\" width=\"560\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Service Protector Monitors your Important Server 2016 Services<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Our team encountered zero issues installing, running and evaluating <a href=\"\/products\/ServiceProtector\/\">Service Protector 5.3<\/a> over a two week period. No problems were found.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/images\/free-apps-on-windows-server-2016.png\" class=\"zoomPopup\" rel=\"zoomgroup noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Free Applications on Server 2016\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/free-apps-on-windows-server-2016.png\" border=\"0\" title=\"Free Applications on Server 2016 (click to enlarge)\" alt=\"Free Applications on Server 2016\" width=\"560\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a name=\"session-0-bug\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>But Server 2016 Contains a Bug: No Keyboard and Mouse in Session 0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>We discovered this problem when we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coretechnologies.com\/blog\/alwaysup\/alwaysup-windows-10\/\">tested Windows 10<\/a> last year, and it now appears to have taken hold on Microsoft&#8217;s Server operating systems as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160104142501\/https:\/\/social.technet.microsoft.com\/Forums\/en-US\/b4e29d63-3b66-4d63-be50-207aff7d6001\/no-mouse-or-keyboard-access-in-session-0?forum=win10itprogeneral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The folks in Redmond are aware of the bug and claim to have a fix<\/a> but several of us who rely on Windows Services have been impatiently awaiting a resolution for over a year now. \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So to sum up, <b>we are pleased to report that our entire suite of applications is compatible with Windows Server 2016<\/b>.
