{"id":8153,"date":"2019-09-18T15:07:28","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T22:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coretechnologies.com\/blog\/?p=8153"},"modified":"2023-01-07T17:36:24","modified_gmt":"2023-01-08T01:36:24","slug":"dropbox-not-working","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coretechnologies.com\/blog\/alwaysup\/dropbox-not-working\/","title":{"rendered":"Dropbox Version 81.4.195 (September 18, 2019) Not Working With AlwaysUp For Some Customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/dropbox-experiencing-issues.png\" title=\"Dropbox is experiencing issues\" alt=\"Dropbox is experiencing issues\" border=\"0\" ><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:24px;\">\nThe most recent release of Dropbox &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/t5\/Desktop-client-builds\/Stable-Build-81-4-195\/m-p\/365784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stable Build 81.4.195<\/a>, posted the morning of September 18 &mdash; may not work properly as a Windows Service with AlwaysUp.\n<\/p>\n<p>We are actively investigating. So far, the problem appears to be related to <a href=\"\/WindowsServices\/FAQ.html#WhatIsSession0Isolation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Session 0<\/a> &mdash; the background desktop hosting Windows Services.<\/p>\n<p>When Dropbox starts in Session 0, some customers report that this error prompt stops the action:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/dropbox-opengl-error.png\" class=\"zoomPopup\" title=\"Dropbox OpenGL Error\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-padding\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/dropbox-opengl-error.png\" title=\"Dropbox OpenGL Error (click to enlarge)\" alt=\"Dropbox OpenGL Error\" border=\"0\" ><\/a><\/div>\n<p>If OK is pressed, Dropbox simply exits &mdash; without synchronizing any files.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"blog-caption\">Is there a workaround?<\/h2>\n<p><b>Yes. Please see the <a href=\"#environment-variable-workaround\">update from 9\/25 (below)<\/a> for a potential workaround. To date, it has worked for several customers.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dropbox says to make sure that your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/t5\/Installs-integrations\/I-m-seeing-an-error-message-quot-Failed-to-create-OpenGL-context\/td-p\/360613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">display drivers are up to date<\/a>. This has resolved the problem for some customers. Please let Dropbox know if it doesn&#8217;t work for you.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, there are a couple other workarounds but neither is a long term solution.<\/p>\n<p>If you start Dropbox in the current session (by selecting <b>Start &#8220;Dropbox&#8221; in this session<\/b> from the <b>Application<\/b> menu), Dropbox will start and your files will be synchronized. However, once you log off, Dropbox will return to Session 0 and it will cease to function again.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is to run Dropbox outside of AlwaysUp, normally on your desktop. Of course, you will have to remain logged in, which is less than ideal.<\/p>\n<p>Please check in the &#8220;Updates&#8221; section below for additional workarounds as they are developed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"blog-caption\">When will this be fixed?<\/h2>\n<p>We&#8217;re not sure when Dropbox will fix the problem.<\/p>\n<p>They seem to create new desktop client builds regularly so we have our fingers crossed that they deliver a resolution very soon.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"blog-caption\">Please let Dropbox know that you are affected<\/h2>\n<p>We encourage you to &#8220;nudge&#8221; the Dropbox team into action by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>contacting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dropbox support<\/a>, and\/or<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>posting a friendly message on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/t5\/Desktop-client-builds\/Stable-Build-81-4-195\/m-p\/365784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dropbox release page<\/a> expressing your frustration with this release.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The more we speak up, the better the chance of a quick fix.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"blog-caption\">We need your help!<\/h2>\n<p>First, <b>can you <a href=\"\/support\/\">let us know<\/a> if you are experiencing trouble with the latest Dropbox?<\/b> Please be sure to answer the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>What version of Windows are you running?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Do you see the &#8220;OpenGL&#8221; error message when you switch to Session 0? That operation is available from the Tools menu in AlwaysUp.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Is your computer a virtual machine? If so, what is the host? (VirtualBox, Hyper-V, VMWare, etc.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Second, <b>can we access your system remotely to troubleshoot?<\/b> We have been unable to reproduce the problem on our systems, and that has been an obstacle to us developing a solution\/workaround. <\/p>\n<p>Your help will be appreciated!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"blog-caption\">Updates<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-top:30px;\">\n<b>September 18 @ 5:38 PM Pacific<\/b>: Eric Sakariasen from <a href=\"https:\/\/connetic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connetic<\/a> has come up with a clever workaround:\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-qa-question-box\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/quotes-transparent-21x21.png\">&nbsp;&nbsp;I found a way to work around this issue, at least in my environment,<\/p>\n<p>We have Dropbox running with separate creds (a service account) I go to the cached installer for 81.4.195, in my case its:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dropbox\\Update\\Download\\{CC46080E-4C33-4981-859A-BBA2F780F31E}\\81.4.195<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I deny all access to the executable via NTFS permissions for that account. Then install the older <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/t5\/Desktop-client-builds\/Stable-Build-80-4-127\/td-p\/364182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">80.4.127<\/a> over the top of the current install (it kills the running version automagically). This seems to break the ability for the updater to do its magic so it will skip this version.<\/p>\n<p>We can only hope the next version is up and running with a fix, if not, rinse and repeat.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This has worked for at least 3 of our customers running Dropbox.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:30px;\">\n<b>September 18 @ 9:20 PM Pacific<\/b>: So far we have thoroughly tested Dropbox version version 81.4.195 running in Session 0 on the following operating systems:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows Server 2019<\/li>\n<li>Windows Server 2012 R2<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 (Build 1903)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>None have exhibited the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the basic test we perform using two computers linked to the same Dropbox account:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Copy a new file into machine&#8217;s A&#8217;s Dropbox folder<\/li>\n<li>Check that the file shows up on dropbox.com<\/li>\n<li>Check that the file shows up in machine B&#8217;s Dropbox folder<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We will continue to test other versions of Windows over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:30px;\">\n<b>September 19 @ 6:15 AM Pacific<\/b>: The Dropbox support team suggests that the problem may be with old display drivers.\n<\/p>\n<p>Perform the steps outlined in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/t5\/Installs-integrations\/I-m-seeing-an-error-message-quot-Failed-to-create-OpenGL-context\/m-p\/360615\/highlight\/true#M75861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post<\/a> to make sure that your PC is up-to-date.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:30px;\">\n<b>September 19 @ 10 PM Pacific<\/b>: Dropbox posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/t5\/Desktop-client-builds\/Beta-Build-82-3-133\/td-p\/366035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beta Build 82.3.133<\/a> earlier today.\n<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not sure if it fixes the problems running in Session 0 (Dropbox doesn&#8217;t post a changelog) but it may be worth a shot. Please try it let us know if it works for you or not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:30px;\"><a name=\"environment-variable-workaround\"><\/a><b>September 25 @ 10:30 PM Pacific<\/b>: Dropbox forum user Wilson7777 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/t5\/Installs-integrations\/I-m-seeing-an-error-message-quot-Failed-to-create-OpenGL-context\/m-p\/367185\/highlight\/true#M78386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has proposed a workaround<\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-qa-question-box\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/quotes-transparent-21x21.png\">&nbsp;&nbsp;For those scratching their heads trying to resolve this OpenGL issue running the latest version of Dropbox + AlwaysUp I have successfully resolved this issue by following these steps:<\/p>\n<p>1. In the Windows start menu enter the search term &#8220;environment variables&#8221; and select &#8220;Edit the system environment variables&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>2. In the dialog that comes up click &#8220;Environment Variables&#8221; then click &#8220;New&#8221; in the system variables section.<\/p>\n<p>3. In the dialog that comes up enter variable name = &#8216;QT_OPENGL&#8217; (without the quotes) and variable value = &#8216;software&#8217; (without the quotes)<\/p>\n<p>Click &#8220;OK&#8221; then &#8220;OK&#8221; then &#8220;OK&#8221; to close the system properties dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>Restart Dropbox within AlwaysUp and you should find the OpenGL issues are resolved if you view through session 0 and Dropbox will be synchronising your files fine.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Please try it and let us know if it works for you!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:30px;\">\n<b>September 26 @ 7:30 AM Pacific<\/b>: Customer Seth Ruppert from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imtins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IMT<\/a> has reported that the 9\/25 fix has resolved the issue on his installations.<\/p>\n<p>And other reports of success are trickling in, so setting the <b>QT_OPENGL<\/b> system environment variable to <b>software<\/b> seems to be working!\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:30px;\">\n<b>September 27 @ 12:30 AM Pacific<\/b>: The fix from 9\/25 is working well so we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coretechnologies.com\/blog\/dropbox-software\/how-to-fix-opengl-problem\/\">documented our recommended workaround in this post<\/a>.
