How to Run CuteFTP as a Windows Service with AlwaysUp

CuteFTP is a leading Windows FTP client. With its support for unattended, automated transfers, customers often need it available all the time to serve file transfer requests.

To install CuteFTP as a Windows Service with AlwaysUp:

1. Download and install CuteFTP, if necessary:

   

2. Download and install AlwaysUp, if necessary.

3. Start AlwaysUp.

4. Select Application > Add to open the Add Application window:

   

5. On the General tab:

   • In the Application field, enter the full path to the CuteFTP executable, cuteftppro.exe. If you installed CuteFTP in the default location, this is:

     C:\Program Files\Globalscape\CuteFTP\cuteftppro.exe

   • In the Start the application field, choose Automatically, but shortly after the computer boots. This setting ensures that the machine's critical supporting services will be up and running before AlwaysUp launches CuteFTP.

   • And in the Name field, enter the name that you will call the application in AlwaysUp. We suggest CuteFTP but you can specify almost anything you like.

   

6. Click over to the Logon tab and enter the username and password of the Windows account in which you installed and use CuteFTP. CuteFTP must run in this account so that it can find its settings.

   

7. Click over to the Startup tab and check the Ensure that the Windows Networking components have started box. This informs AlwaysUp that CuteFTP needs the TCP/IP networking stack to operate.

   

8. Click the Save button. In a couple of seconds, an application called CuteFTP will show up in the AlwaysUp window. The program is installed as a service but it's not yet running and the state will be "Stopped":

   

9. To start CuteFTP, choose Application > Start "CuteFTP". The state will transition to "Running":

   

   Note that you won't see CuteFTP's window because it's running in the background, in the isolated Session 0.

   If you need to interact with CuteFTP, choose Application > Restart "CuteFTP" in this session to bring the application visibly onto your desktop.

10. That's it! Next time your computer boots, CuteFTP will start up immediately, before anyone logs on.
