Run Jottacloud as a Windows Service with AlwaysUp

How to Run Jottacloud 24/7 as a Windows Service with AlwaysUp

Start Jottacloud as soon as your computer boots. No need to log on to keep your files and folders synchronized!

Jottacloud automatically synchronizes your important folders across all your devices.

To configure Jottacloud with AlwaysUp 8.5 and later:

  1. Download and install AlwaysUp, if necessary.

  2. Download and install the Jottacloud Windows client, if necessary. Please make a note of where you installed it as this will be used in a later step.

  3. Start AlwaysUp.

  4. Select Application > Add to open the Add Application window:

    Add Application

  5. On the General tab:

    • In the Application field, enter the full path to the Jottacloud executable, Jotta.exe. If you installed Jottacloud in the default location, this is:

      C:\Program Files\Jotta\Jotta.exe

    • In the Name field, enter the name that you will call this application in AlwaysUp. We used Jottacloud for this tutorial but you can enter virtually any name you like.

  6. Click over to the Logon tab and enter the user name and password of the Windows account in which you installed and configured Jottacloud. Jottacloud must run in this account so that it can find its settings.

  7. Click over to the Startup tab and check the Ensure that the Windows Networking components have started box. This informs AlwaysUp that Jottacloud needs TCP/IP networking support to do its work.

  8. Click the Save button. In a couple of seconds, an application called Jottacloud will show up in the AlwaysUp window. It is not yet running though.

  9. Before we start Jottacloud as a Windows Service, we must prevent a second copy from starting when you log on. To do so:

    1. Start Jottacloud if necessary (Start button > All Programs > Jottacloud > Jottacloud)

    2. Right-click on the Jottacloud tray icon (Jottacloud Tray Icon) and select Settings...

      Open Jottacloud Settings

    3. Uncheck the Launch Jottacloud when the computer starts box. (Note that this setting is somewhat misleading - it will only start Jottacloud after you log in!)

  10. If Jottacloud is running, stop it now by right-clicking on the tray icon (Jottacloud Tray Icon) and choosing Quit.

    Quit Jottacloud

  11. To start Jottacloud from AlwaysUp choose Application > Start "Jottacloud". After a couple of seconds, the state should transition to Running.

Note that you won't see Jottacloud's icon in the task bar (nor will you see the nice icons in your Jottacloud folder) because Jottacloud is running in the background (in Session 0), but your files will be synchronized as normal.

On Windows 8/7/Vista and Windows Server 2012/2008, you can choose Application > Start "Jottacloud" in this Session if you wish to start jottacloud on your desktop and interact with its tray icon normally. (More on this in the Session 0 Isolation entry in the AlwaysUp Frequently Asked Questions.)

  12. That's it! Next time your computer boots, Jottacloud will start up immediately, before anyone logs on. We encourage you to edit the Jottacloud entry in AlwaysUp and check out the many other settings that may be appropriate for your environment.
